ORGANIC RANKINE CYCLE TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS ORC TECHNOLOGY?

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) process is a thermodynamic cycle that converts low-temperature heat (75–300°C) into electricity using an organic fluid with a low boiling point. Unlike traditional steam-based systems, ORC systems operate efficiently at lower temperatures, making them ideal for waste heat recovery in industrial and power generation settings.

This widely available thermal energy is found in geothermal heat, industrial processes, and combustion engines, making ORC systems a versatile solution for converting waste heat into clean, cost-effective electricity. By improving energy efficiency, ORC technology helps reduce fuel consumption, COâ‚‚ emissions, and operational costs across industries.

How does the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) work?

The Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) process generates electricity by exploiting the temperature difference between a heat source and a cooling sink, using an organic working fluid in a closed-loop thermodynamic cycle.

  1. The hot input (e.g., water heated by waste heat) transfers thermal energy to the organic working fluid in an evaporator, causing it to boil and evaporate into a high-pressure vapor.
  2. The pressurized vapor expands through a turbine, driving a generator to produce electricity.
  3. The vapor is then cooled in a condenser by a cold input, reducing its pressure and condensing it back into a liquid.
  4. The liquid working fluid is pumped back to the evaporator, where the cycle repeats, continuously generating clean electricity.
